North Texas rude hosts to WKU
North Texas and Western Kentucky played tick for tack during the first half of their contest at The Super Pit. It was the play of Roger Franklin, getting his fourth start of the season, that kept
North Texas in the game during the first half as the result of him scoring a season high 15 points all in the first half and ended the game with 20 points . WKU went after him and his defensive play stopped WKU’s best player.
Once again Jordan Williams showed why he is probably the best player in the conference coming in off the bench.
North Texas seemed to be in a vulnerable situation when he came in the game and hit a three. It seemed to get the fans into the game and a lift to the team. When it looked like WKU was starting to game momentum, Williams seemed to make that play that turned WKU back.
Even though North Texas held the lead most of the first half, the two teams played even with North Texas holding a 41-37 lead at halftime.
WKU hit a three to open the second half to close to 41-40. Every time WKU came within one of North Texas, they would hit a clutch basket to stay ahead of the Hilltoppers. It was Tony Mitchell getting the fans into the game early in the second half and pulling North Texas out front. It started with him hitting a three, followed by a swat and a dunk at the other end to put North Texas up 52-46.
After a timeout at 16:28, Chris Jones gave North Texas their largest lead of the game at the time 54-46. WKU tried to climb back into the game but J. Williams passing to Mitchell for a dunk followed by Franklin feeding it to J. Williams for a dunk gave North Texas a 12 point lead. Niko Stojiljkovic like what he saw so he gave the ball to Franklin for a two point a layup and put North Texas up 14 points. With 12:50 left in the game, North Texas was on a 19-9 run leading 60-46 and a timeout called.
WKU finally got a two point basket after the timeout to make the score 60-48. They continued to cut the North Texas lead closing to within ten when Franklin hit a two pushing the lead to 12. WKU started to mount a comeback but Mitchell hit a three and J. Williams stuffing the ball into the hole and with 8:07 left in the game North Texas was ahead 69-54.
Franklin delighted the crowd with a big reverse dunk to give North Texas a 16 point lead.
Not to be outdone, with about two minutes left in the game Forrest Robinson got his first action of the 2012 season. He immediately got a block, hit for a two, got a rebound then got another rebound helping North Texas to an 84-67 win.
North Texas improves to 10-8, 3-2 while WKU falls to 5-13, 1-4.
