North Texas Comes Alive in Second Half
The 3,000 basketball fans watched North Texas put Chris Jones,
Tony Mitchell, Brandan Walton, Roger Franklin and Alzee Williams on the court
to face Sun Belt Conference member Troy. North Texas was without the services of
Kedrick Hogans who sustained a bad knee injury during the loss to
Arkansas-Little Rock. 
The first half, North Texas came out with cold shooting from the floor and the free throw line. However, their defense kept Troy off balance and they did not shoot much better.
Although North Texas got the tip-off, it was Troy getting the first four points of the game. It wasn’t until A. Williams put in a basket North Texas got their first two points of the game. Walton got a steal, two points and the free throw to make the score 8-5 at the 15:48 mark with Troy on top.
Walton then tied the game at eight when he hit a long three. J. Williams, coming in off the bench, slammed the ball through to the crowds delight giving North Texas its first lead of the game at 10-8. However, at the next timeout Troy was ahead 13-10.
Out of the timeout Troy continued to outscore North Texas and had a 10-0 run before J. Williams got the layup and a foul but missed the free throw. J.Williams brought North Texas even closer when he hit a three making it a 15-18 game. Niko Stojiljkovic brought North Texas closer when he hit the second of his free throws. However, Troy kept answering North Texas challenges and extended their lead. Once again it was J.Williams giving North Texas a big lift when he hit for a three. Jones kept North Texas close by putting back a missed shot for two and with 6:42 left in the half Troy was up 26-20.
Both teams continued to miss shots until Walton hit a three making it a 26-23 game. Jones hit a three to tie the game and Troy called a timeout.
After the timeout a Jones pass to Franklin got the crowd into the game after he slammed the ball through the nets. North Texas went on a 10-0 run and a timeout was called at the 3:21 mark with North Texas leading 28-26.
Franklin then got a blocked shot and on a quick break he passed to A. Williams who muscled the ball through for two points, was fouled, making the free it pushed North Texas to a five point lead. Troy came back with a basket and a three point shot to tie the game. Walton got a steal and A. Williams hit for two to give North Texas a two point lead. Troy tied the game when Mitchell was called for a goal tending and took the lead on a free throw. The final score of the half come on Franklin hitting one of his two free throws to tie 33-33 at half
North Texas and Troy battled back and forth to open the second half before North Texas went on an 8-0 run. When the first timeout was called North Texas was up 47-39 at the 15:39 mark.
Coming out of the timeout, Jones hit for another three. Mitchell then got another blocked shot which ended up with Walton missing a three point attempt but Stojiljkovic got the rebound and the put back for 52-39 game. That is where the score stood with 13:29 left in the game.
North Texas and Troy traded baskets several times with Stojiljkovic scoring North Texas’ six points on three baskets. J. Williams pushed North Texas further ahead by hitting a three and with 10:56 left in the game North Texas was up 61-46.
It was then the J. Williams show as he extended the North Texas lead when he hit a baseline shot, a turnaround jumper and a three. At the 7:39 mark North Texas was up 70-56. Troy closed the score to 72-60 with six minutes left.
North Texas continued to add baskets and after a reverse dunk by Mitchell the crowd jumped to their feet and a timeout called by Head Coach Johnny Jones with North Texas up 77-60.
Jones got the inbound steal and a pass to A. Williams who went strong to the bucket for two points and a foul. With 3:07 left a timeout was called with North Texas up 79-62 and A. Williams at the line.
It was North Texas continuing to hit baskets as A. Williams completed the three point play by putting in his free throw. Jones got two points off an offensive rebound. Then he hit another two and a foul he hit the free throw to complete the three point play making it a 85-62 game.
Alonzo Edwards hit on an inbound pass before Troy ended the scoring of the game with a three making the final score 87-65. North Texas improves to 8-7, 1-1 while Troy falls to 5-8, 0-2.
