North Texas Overpowers UNO

Former Sun Belt member the University of New Orleans (9-5) made a trip back to Denton to take on North Texas. Over 2,600 fans saw the Privateers give North Texas (7-6) all they could handle in the first half. It wasn't until about the three minute mark left in the half that North Texas seemed to come alive.

The two teams battled each other before North Texas was able to hold a 14-11 lead at the 11:57 mark when timeout was called.

Coming out of the timeout, UNO hit two baskets to take a 15-14 lead. North Texas seemed to respond to the challenge as Roger Franklin tied the game after hitting one of two free throws. Trey Norris gave the lead back to North Texas after he hit a basket and it was a 17-15 game at the 7:51 mark.

Tony Mitchell pulled North Texas further ahead after flushing a two pointer, which was followed by Franklin hitting for two making it a 21-15 game. UNO closed the gap with a basket and was about to add another score when Chris Jones got a steal passed it to Mitchell who passed it to Jones for a basket making it a 23-17 game. Alzee Williams responded to a UNO basket and with 3:30 left in the first half a timeout was called with the score 25-22.

North Texas continued to move ahead of UNO when Mitchell added two more points by putting in two free throws, North Texas added two more, before Jones added two more and at the 2:32 mark a timeout was called with North Texas up 31-22.

North Texas extended their lead when Niko Stojliljkovic put in a basket under the rim and just as the halftime buzzer sounded, A. Williams hit a three making the halftime score of 38-23.

The second half opened with UNO scoring first. Mitchell answered with a dunk and UNO responded with a two then North Texas went on a run. A. Williams hit for two, Mitchell hit two free throws, Kedrick Hogans hook shot was good and Mitchell’s reverse dunk got the crowds excited as well as put North Texas up 48-31. Just before the timeout was called A. Williams hit for two making it a 50-31 game.

Out of the timeout, UNO scored first by hitting one of two free throws then it was Norris hitting for two followed by Stojliljvoch putting in two baskets in a row making it a 56-35 game at the 11:38 mark.

UNO closed to 19 behind North Texas with two free throws.  Mitchell answered by hitting one free throw and followed it up with a left-handed hook shot to make it a 59-39 with 7:56 left in the game and a timeout was called.

North Texas continued to pull away when Jones hit for two, Norris hit for two, Walton hit a jumper and Alonzo Edwards hit two free throws.  Edwards added to the score after he hit for another two, Jones added two more on a layup and Holman added one with a free throw. Edwards hit another two points and at the 3:42 mark a timeout was called with the score 74-41.

J. Williams responded to a UNO basket. Then UNO hit two baskets in a row before North Texas Head Coach Johnny Jones called a timeout with the score 76-47 and 2:01 left in the game.

Coming out of the timeout, J. Williams got a stick back for the final score of 78-47.

North Texas will open conference play when they face University of Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday at The Super Pit.
