Evans Impressed with North Texas

It was a good game but a wet day for recruits visiting the North Texas-Middle Tennessee match-up. One of those recruits in attendance was Je’rod Evans, QB, 6-4, 190, Mansfield, Texas.  Evans was impressed with the facilities and the way the football team played.  He is considering North Texas along with the offers from Navy, Air Force among others.

Evans is a pro-style quarterback who takes the ball from under center, is effective back in the spread offense and is a threat to run from either location. He can run with the ball when in trouble but generally waits until all the receivers are covered before taking off. When passing, he makes the right decision to where the ball should be thrown and whether to throw to the back shoulder or to lead the receiver. He has thrown only eight picks all season. Two were thrown in the final playoff game against Abilene and three were against Denton Guyer. The other five interceptions were spread over the remaining schedule.

Denton-Guyer fans may remember him from their final game of the season. Evans scored on a 60 yard touchdown run in the third quarter of their game which at the time put Mansfield up by 24 points. On the play, Evans, on a fake option pitch, kept the ball, broke two tackles on his way to the end zone to help Mansfield to their 48-24 upset win.

Evans liked the way North Texas Head Football Coach Dan McCarney went with the best player on the field instead of playing the upper classmen because they have been there longer.  He also like the fact McCarney would go for touchdowns on fourth and one instead of kicking field goals. He thought the coach was telling the team he believed in them.

As for the stadium, it too was impressive to Evans and it would be a place he would like to play in.

Could Evans be a two for one? Five of the 25 touchdowns he as thrown this season has been to his younger brother Junior Lance Evans. Lance is the leading receiver for the Tigers with 30 catches for 563 yards.

It was the Evans to Evans combination in the state championship run against bitter city rival Mansfield-Timberview when Evans hit his brother with one second remaining for the 52 yard winning touchdown pass.

Mansfield ended their season with seconds left in their game against Abilene and down 25-22. The coach decided to go for the win instead of tying the game. The Tigers fell short on the pass at the back of the endzone.
