UTA Pummels North Texas
UTA got the tip-off but North Texas got the turnover. Jordan Williams hit for two, was fouled, hit the free throw to give North Texas a 3-0 lead. That would be it for North Texas because UTA came back with a vengeance and simply handed North Texas their heads on a platter. It was simply an ugly game for North Texas, one they couldn’t do anything right. A lot of credit has to go to UTA and their pressure defense which kept North Texas off balance the entire game.
The butt whipping started with UTA closing the score to 3-2 as a result of two free throws. They then took the lead, 4-3 as a result of one of the many turnovers North Texas served up. The Mavs pressure defense just kept forcing North Texas into turnovers and forcing North Texas to shoot bad shots. At the 15:24 mark North Texas Head Basketball Coach Johnny Jones tried to regroup his troops by calling a timeout trailing 3-11.
After the timeout, the North Texas shooting continued to be cold and they continued to cough the ball up. It looked like North Texas was going to mount a comeback when Trey Norris forced a turnover on a five second violation. He then was able to hit for a three closing the gap to 6-11. UTA got a steal and hit for three. North Texas could not do anything on their possession so UTA took advantage by getting a turnover and three points. North Texas keep trying to get the shots to go in but they simply would not fall. UTA did everything right. With UTA at the line, the score 6-19 a timeout was called with 11:53 left in the first quarter. At this point, North Texas was shooting only 18%.
Coming out of the timeout, UTA missed the free point, but North Texas was called for a lane violation, giving them a second shot. They missed on the second shot with North Texas getting the rebound but true to form they turned the ball over again. They did the same thing on their next possession and UTA took advantage hitting for two, then they got a steal resulting in two more points for a 23-6 lead. Brandan Walton was fouled on his shot and he missed his two free throws. The result was UTA getting the rebound, going down the court for another two points and a timeout was called with North Texas trailing 6-25.
Chris Jones was fouled after the timeout so he was at the line for a one on one. He missed, UTA grabbed the rebound and went down the court for another two points for a 27-6 lead. North Texas followed that up by immediately turning the ball over allowing UTA to build their lead with two point bucket. After North Texas was called for an illegal pick UTA took the turnover down the court putting in two more points. North Texas tried a long ball, missed, UTA got the rebound and at the other end of the court scored two more points. North Texas coughed the ball up on a steal, UTA added two more points. A timeout was called with UTA at the line and a 37-6 lead.
UTA hit the free throws, got another turnover and hit a three for a 41-6 game. UTA add to their lead when they were fouled and hit both free throws for 43-6 lead. Norris went up under the basketball and was fouled. He hit the first free throw but missed the second which was rebounded by UTA allowing them to hit for a three on the other end of the court. After several possession changes Jacob Holmen hit for a three closing the gap to 10-46. It lasted until UTA’s next possession when they sank a three. UTA was up 48-10 at the 3:52 mark and Walton at the line for North Texas.
Walton missed the first free throw but got the second to fall. UTA turned the ball over to North Texas but North Texas returned the favor and UTA thanked them with a three. Jones added a couple of points for North Texas when he hit two free throws to make the score 13-51. He added a couple of more points on a layup, was fouled but missed the free throw. He gave North Texas some hope going into halftime when he hit a three making the halftime score UTA 55, North Texas 18.
It was more of the same during the second half. It started early with UTA taking their first possession down the court for two. They quickly added two more after a North Texas missed shot, then two more after another North Texas missed basket. The score was 61-18 before Jordan Williams got North Texas on the scoreboard for the first time in the second half with a two point bucket. UTA added a point at the free throw line but then added a three after a North Texas three refused to go in. Kedrick Hogans got his shot to go, then North Texas hit for two and Williams added another two to close North Texas to 27-65. It looked like North Texas was hitting their stride then UTA hit for two and was fouled. With UTA at the line and 15:01left in the game a timeout was called with North Texas down 27-67.
UTA missed their free throws, North Texas got the rebound then at the other end of the court Hogans got his own rebound, powered the ball back in and drew the foul. The wheels then continued to fall off. Hogans missed the free throw which was rebounded by UTA and they slammed dunked for two on the other end of the court. UTA rebounded another missed North Texas shot going down the court getting two, drawing the foul and putting it in. North Texas added a couple of points on free throws by Niko Stojiljkovic but North Texas was down 31-71. Stojiljkovic added another basket followed by Jones getting a steal and a slam dunk. UTA was fouled and with 11:46 left in the game, a timeout was called with UTA up 71-35.
After UTA hit both free throws Stojiljkovic responded with a basket of his own. UTA added two more points on a basket and added one more at the free throw line. Jones hit a three point basket. Then after a UTA blocking foul he was on the free throw line sinking both shots. UTA responded by getting a two point bucket which was matched by Jones getting two. With just under eight minutes left in the game a timeout was called with UTA at the line with a 78-44 lead.
UTA hit both free throws to make it an 80-44 game and a timeout was called with 7:40 left in the game.
North Texas looked like they were going to try to make some short of a comeback when the North Texas defense forced a shot clock violation. J. Williams hit for three to bring North Texas closer at 47-80. UTA responded with two, then another two before Stojiljkovic got a put back. UTA kept on scoring, hitting for two and drawing the foul. After the free throw went in UTA held an 87-49 advantage. However, Williams hit for three so UTA hit a three, was fouled, and hit both ends of a one on one putting them up 92-52. Williams was fouled and hit both his free throws. With 3:41 left in the game a timeout was called with North Texas trailing 53-92 and Alonzo Edwards at the line.
Edwards made got one free throw to make the score 54-92. Walton added to the score when he put in a long ball followed by Williams doing the same thing. North Texas closed the gap to 60-92. UTA added three on a bucket and a foul. Jones answered by getting a basket. He was later fouled and hit both free throws making it a 95-64 game. UTA slammed the ball down for the final score of the game. UTA took North Texas to the woodshed 97-64.
