Trio Still Committed to North Texas

It is that time of the year when the football recruiters are out looking for their next signing class to fill holes to graduation or needs that surfaced over the year. In recruiting the needs, they one thing they look at is a teams win/loss record. A great win record signals there are some great players on the team. When it comes to 3-A, Chapel Hill, Tyler, Texas their 10-0 record, #16 ranking in the state of Texas and #156 national ranking points to a pretty good football program.

North Texas has three commitments from the Bulldogs. Two running backs, Rex Rollins, 6-1, 185, 4.5; Andrew Tucker, 6-0, 180, 4.6 and a defensive tackle Sir Calvin Wallace, 6-2, 300 lbs. All three committed back in July and according to their Head Coach Thomas Sitton “they are going to North Texas.” While other programs are interested in the three, all three will be wearing the green next season.

“They liked what they saw at North Texas and the coaches,” when asked why they were committed to play for North Texas Head Football Coach Dan McCarney. When they saw the new facilities, they were simply impressed. They firmly believe the new coaching staff is turning the North Texas program around and all three want to be a part of it.

Not wanting to go too much detail about the players GPA, Sitton stated two players have the grades while one is close.  The one that is close is working on his classes and the coach feels sure he will have the grades when it comes to signing day.

The first thing someone notices about the recruits is two are running backs, “but we have four” Sitton stated. So the kids understand about being a team player and about how they have to perform when they get into the game because if they don’t they might see a decrease in playing time. As a result, each one has helped make the other better. Here’s the proof, even though the program uses the spread offense, they are rushing for 310.4 yards a game, while passing for only 217.1 y.p.g.  and are putting up 49.3 points a game.

Rollins is the #1 ball carrier on the team with 65 touches for 621 yards for a nice 9.55 yards per carry and five touchdowns. Those numbers are even more impressive considering he was injured in the season opening game and was out for three weeks. Rollins has that knack to hit the right holes. Take a look.  Rollins video displaying his skills.

Andrew Tucker is the #2 rusher with 56 carries for 564 yards or 10.07 yards per carry and six touchdowns. Here is a video of Tucker’s work.  Tucker has the knack to find the right holes.

Wallace has quick first steps and clogs up the middle. Here is a link to see him play. Wallace clogs up the middle.

Chapel Hill beat Westwood 74-23, Whitehouse 59-49, Carthage 21-20, Hallsville 29-22, Lindale 51-29, Center 45-17, Bullard 50-6, Brownsboro 49-21, Rusk 51-7 and Athens 64-7. They are facing Jasper in the first round of UIL Playoff Competition.  What is important about the Carthage win is they are the two time defending state champions.

Since North Texas is losing one of the best running backs in its history and a record setting NCAA player at that, they need some quality players to step up. One of the hardest thing a high school player has to face when moving on to the college ranks is sharing the ball with other players on the team. Since Rollins and Tucker already know how to share the ball, it looks like it will be an easier transition for them when they get to Apogee Stadium.
