North Texas Gets Eaten by the Wolves
North Texas traveled to Jonesboro to take on Sun Belt Conference member Arkansas State. ASU is the hottest team in the conference after winning four straight conference games and sitting alone at the top of the conference after dumping North Texas 37-14.
The game started out good for North Texas as they won the toss but they deferred to the second half. ASU took the ball down the field for the score and a 7-0 lead.
On North Texas’ first possession, on third down, North Texas Quarterback Derek Thompson suffered a concussion and would not come back into the game. After a punt, ASU hit a field goal to give them a 10-0 lead.
North Texas was unable to move the ball under new Quarterback Andrew McNulty so they punted back to ASU. They moved to inside the North Texas twenty when Brad Graham forced a fumble which was recovered by Zach Orr at the seven yard line.
After a North T
exas punt, ASU was driving, when on third down, Forlando Johnson sacked the quarterback at the North Texas 13 yard line to force a field goal attempt. However, the ASU holder picked the ball up, ran through the right side of the line for a touchdown and after the extra point ASU was up 17-0.
North Texas was unable to move the ball on their next possession while ASU scored on theirs for a lead of 24-0.
Once again North Texas couldn’t move the ball so they kicked it back to ASU. They scored with 90 seconds left in the half making it ASU 31, North Texas 0 at the break.
North Texas received the kickoff on the second half. They got their first down of the game on their first series of downs at forty yard line on a Drew Miller catch. North Texas seemed they were going to be able to move the ball when Christopher Bynes on the next play got another first down. However, ASU rose up to stop North Texas at their 44 yard line. Punter Will Atterberry pinned ASU back at the two yard line.
North Texas got their first stop of the game at the ASU 11 yard line forcing ASU to punt. North Texas got the ball at the ASU 42. McNulty carried the ball down to the two yard line. After a penalty, the ball was at the one where it was carried into the endzone by Lance Dunbar. After the Zack Olen point after North Texas closed the gap to 7-31.
On the following kick off, Greg Brown stopped the ASU receiver at 21 yard line on a crushing tackle. ASU was able to move the ball down to the North Texas 36 yard line where they went for it on fourth and about one. Brandon Akpunku tripped the quarterback behind the line forcing him to fall short of the first down giving North Texas the ball.
ASU got the ball back, after stopping North Texas. They started driving and it looked like they were going in for another score when they were stopped on an interception by Richard Abbe at the 35 yard line.
North Texas moved the ball down to the ASU 35 yard line where they went for it on fourth down. Dunbar got the first down running the ball. Later on the same drive, North Texas when for it again on a fourth and one at the ASU 26 yard line. Brelan Chancellor’s catch at the 17 yard line gave North Texas the first down. The drive ended when McNulty threw an interception in the end zone.
ASU moved down the field for a touchdown but missed the extra point giving them a 37-7 lead.
North Texas was able to move the ball down the field one their final possession. With 1:01 left in the game Chancellor caught a touchdown pass for the final score of the game and North Texas loses 14-37.
