North Texas Versus UL-L

If you don’t think the #28 University of Louisiana-Lafayette (5-1, 3-0) versus #92 North Texas (2-4, 1-1) contest is not important to the Ragin’ Cajuns’ then consider this, the UL-L ticket office extended their operation time this week in order to handle the anticipated ticket sales. The Cajuns are on pace to set a new home attendance record and shatter the 1977 mark of 25,224. At this point in the season they are averaging 28,285 per game and it’s expected to be a full house of 31,000 football fans this Homecoming Weekend.

The Cajuns are under new Head Coach Mark Hudspeth and have gotten off to a fast start. After losing their first game of the season they now have won five in a row which is their best start since 1988 which ties a Sun Belt record.  They are looking to bump off North Texas to win six in a row, become bowl qualified and strengthen their hold on first place. A loss would put North Texas out of the race for the conference title.

UL-L opened the season in Stillwater, Okla. Falling to Oklahoma State 34-61. They went to Kent State taking a 20-12 before playing Nicholls State at home winning 38-21. The Cajuns then travelled to Miami, Florida to take on preseason Sun Belt Conference pick to win the conference Florida International 36-31. Returning home they bumped off Florida Atlantic 37-34 and beating Troy last week 31-17. Now they await North Texas for their 66th Homecoming.

UL-L has owned the series between the two teams winning 5 of the 6 contests. The last time the two teams met was Oct. 10, 2009 in Lafayette were UL-L came back from a ten point deficient to win 38-34.

Senior Quarterback Chris Masson under center for the last two years and started behind center this year but was bumped from the job by Junior Blaine Gautier.

Under Hudspeth leadership, Gautier was a Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week in week 2. When he was injured last week, Masson came in from the bench to guide the Cajuns to a 31-17 upset win over Troy and was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the week. With Gautier healthy, Masson will be watching from the bench but ready to get into the game if called upon. If he does get in the game, North Texas can’t let up because Masson can move the football.

However, the North Texas defense has to keep their eyes on Tight End Ladarius Green. He is earning a lot of attention as a possible draft pick. He is considered to be one of the top five tight ends in college today.  Last year he was the bested the other five tight ends in receiving yards, yards per catch and tied with most touchdowns.  He has been on the John Mackey Award Watch List and Fred Biletnikoff Award Watch List.

While the Cajun offensive line has done will in the five games only giving up one sack and one penalties called on them in the last three games.

In the last two games no one has run for over 100 yards.

With North Texas ranked sixth and UL-L ninth in preseason Sun Belt predictions, this game could have been considered as another pillow fight. However, things have changed and this game could determine the conference title.

Odds maker have North Texas as 9 point underdogs.
