Fourth Quarter Turns Against North Texas
There was excitement in air in Lafayette as North Texas was visiting the University of Louisiana-Lafayette for their Homecoming Game. This was a surprise game between the two teams since both were expected to be fighting to keep out of last place in the conference. Instead both teams were going to banging away for first place.
The Cajuns received the kick-off. On the first series of plays, Zack Orr caused a fumble at the UL-L 31 yard line which was recovered by Brad Graham. North Texas moved the ball to the seven yard line where on fourth and short, North Texas Head Football Coach Dan McCarney lined up to go for it. The Cajuns’ called a timeout, as a result Zack Olen came in to nail the 24 yard line giving North Texas a 3-0 lead and their first score in the first quarter on the road all season long.
UL-L scored to take a 7-3 lead. After the kick-off and exchanging possessions, North Texas took over at the Cajun 32 yard line. The drive finished when Lance Dunbar took the ball into the endzone for his 43rd touchdown giving North Texas a 10-7 lead. The quarter ended when Freddie Warner broke up a Cajun pass to bring up second down.
The second quarter started with Orlando Johnson stopping UL-L to make it fourth and less than one yard for a first down at their own 25 yard. The Cajuns went for it and were was stopped short of the first down when Ryan Boutwell came knifing through to stand up the ball carrier short of the first down to get North Texas the ball back on downs.
The Cajuns held forcing North Texas to try a 47 yard field goal attempt by Zack Olen. UL-L , who are fifth in the nation in blocked field goal attempts, blocked the North Texas attempt.
Michael Stojkovic, subbing for Jeremy Phillips, sacked Gautier for a loss of seven on the first play of the series. However on the drive, UL-L was able to convert a third and 20 and eventually threw a 25 yard touchdown to Ladarius Green his second of the game. The extra point was no good to make it a 13-10 UL-L lead.
Neither team was able to score before halftime. The half ended when Brandon McCoy sacked the UL-L quarterback.
The second half opened with North Texas taking the kick-off but they were not able to move the ball and were forced to punt. Will Atterberry pinned the Cajuns back at the ten yard line, but after a penalty they were able to move out to the 17 yard line. After Brandon Akupunku got the sack on third down, UL-L was forced to punt giving North Texas the ball at the 44 yard line.
On the next series of play the highlight was on third and long, a perfect throw to Christopher Bynes in traffic gave North Texas the ball at the UL-L 40 yard line. North Texas able to move the ball for an Olen 42 yard field goal attempt which was wide left.
After North Texas held UL-L on the next series of plays, the Cajuns punter put the ball out at the one yard line with 4:23 left in the third quarter. ULL held forcing the punt out of the endzone. Atterberry had a beautiful punt which was dropped by the UL-L receiver and recovered by Julian Herrin.
UL-L pushed North Texas back to the thirty yard line forcing a punt. Not much happened in scoring during the third quarter but the fourth quarter the Cajuns put 17 points on the board to win the game 30-10.
Andrew McNulty came in late in the fourth quarter but he was unable to spark the offense but even his efforts proved fruitless.
The Cajuns are the first team in Sun Belt history to start a season 6-1, 4-0. They are now bowl qualified and strengthened their hold on first place in the league.
North Texas drops to 2-5, 1-2 and return home this Saturday for Homecoming against University of Louisiana-Monroe.
