Tailgating Taking Hold
After some medical issues, have clearance from the VA Hospital I’ll be around for a couple more years to drive my wife crazy. Sorry for not getting some stories up about North Texas.
Finally, got to see Athletic Director Rick Villereal’s dream, Apogee Stadium. Was able to see it grow out of the ground when the opportunity presented itself. However, seeing it completed it is something that every North Texas fan should see.
The tailgating area has the potential to surpass the University of Mississippi’s “The Grove.” For those that have been to “The Grove” know is it considered by a vast majority of football fans the best tailgating in the nation. For those that have not been to an Ole Miss game need to make a trip to see. Maybe RV can set up a game in Oxford.
Just talking about tailgating. For not have tailgating until RV arrived, North Texas is doing fine but still has a way to go. Hey, North Texas even has a leg up on TCU when it comes to tailgating. When asking TCU where to park my recreation Vehicle (RV) at home games they did not have place. North Texas has tailgating location to set up the big rigs.
Tailgating is the key to the success of most SEC schools attendance. It is part of the social event which surrounds home games and keeps fans returning. Tailgating is not just before the game but after the game. After games fans go to the RV areas to watch football games on televisions, go to fraternity houses to listen bands or the local nightlife. North Texas has the local nightlife after the game but improvement is needed in the first two areas.
GoMeanGreen.com needs to applauded for their efforts in tailgating. Very few tailgating areas at other schools have an independant website setting up for their posters. Most of the time sites like GoMeanGreen.com get overlooked by the local media and their efforts are overlooked. Stop by and give them a pat on the back they really deserve it they have a great setup.
Going forward, RV tailgating points to the success of a program. Right now North Texas is weak in is area. There where three RV/campers at the Indiana game. North Texas should have around 50 at every home game and 25 at away games. They are the lighting rod for a programs success. After home games some coaches visit these locations to visit with the fans. At away games it is where North Texas fans gather to socialize. However, considering tailgating is about 12 years old it is doing OK. It is like a baby just beginning to walk.
Before looking into the state of the program and looking at the Alabama and Indiana game, once last thing about tailgating.
Tailgating with the fraternity I was with, as well as other ones. They cooked their foods then pulled down their canopies and get their grills into their vehicles before the game. Why? Any school with a successful tailgating area will tell you no one pulls their location down before the game. It is where fans go after the game to cheer or talk about why a team won or lost.
Some maybe afraid things may get stolen. However, there are plenty of people, like my wife, that do not care about the football game that want to stay at the tailgate site to watch TV. They want to visit with other people that do not what to go see the game. They will watch the sites along with the law enforcement. Face it the grills take too long to cool off to get into the vehicles before the game starts.
After the game there was a light crowd that made it to the Administration Building to watch the green lights get turned out. What was interesting was most of the crowd were female. Shows they have a lot of North Texas spirit which will bode well for attendance in the future.
Coming up, why the Alabama game was not as bad as some fans think and why the Indiana game was won by the players and nearly lost by the coaches.
