No Doubt All Game Long, UNT Wins
Jackson State came into Denton figuring to give North Texas all they wanted. They were coming in with a big win over Florida International and had played some very powerful teams close. North Texas was coming in with a loss and JSU figured they could steal a win.
Head Coach Johnny Jones was not pleased with the team's effort in the last game and wanted them to play better defense against JSU.
Jones got want he wanted and the Tigers were simply stymied all game. The Tigers were having problems scoring from inside the paint forcing JSU to go to the outside. JSU is normally a great scoring team from long range but the North Texas defense prevented the long ball from working. As a result, North Texas went on a 22-4 run in the middle of the first period and JSU was never able to recover. The run allowed North Texas to go the locker room at halftime up 41-19.
The second half, North Texas came out sluggish and could not get anything to fall. Although the offense struggled the defense was solid and only allowed JSU to cut the North Texas lead to 14 points in the second half.
The North Texas defense was powerful enough to keep JSU's top scorer from getting any points until 14:30 left in the game.
After JSU trimmed North Texas' lead to 14 points at 47-33 with 11:30 left in the game, Shannon Shorter at the line hit two of his three free throws. JSU hit for a two which was followed by Tristian Thompson hit a three resulting in North Texas up 55-35. The lead from this point rocked from 16-20 points for North Texas.
With about six minutes left in the game Kedrick Hogans hit the floor hard and the crowd was quiet. He was escorted off the field and did not return to the game. He was able to walk out of the locker room after the game and is expected to see the doctors. About one minute later Thompson went down hard but he was able to stay in the game.
With the game well in control at the 2:17 mark Jones put in some bench players including Freshman Guard Avery Redmon and Junior Guard Tyler Hall. North Texas went onto win 68-49.
The 3,177 fans watched North Texas win their 11th straight home game and run their record to 8-2. JSU leaves Denton with a 2-7 record.
Because of finals week, North Texas will not have any games until next Sunday, December 19th when Texas State comes calling.
