The Final Fouts Game

North Texas will close down the old lady this Saturday against Big 12 Kansas State (6-5, 3-4). As Athletic Director Rick Villarreal pulls, drags, kicks, and urges North Texas to the Football Championship Series level, they will play for the last time at Fouts Field, which was more fitting of a Division III program than a facility that represented the more elite football program North Texas strives to be.

This will be the final regular season game for both teams. At the end of the game North Texas will be packing up the locker room while the Wildcats will be moving on to a bowl. KSU is coming into the game on a two game losing streak, falling at Missouri 28-38 and at Colorado 36-44. They would love to hang one on North Texas which would help ease the pain of the season that opened with four wins and now in danger of going 6-6 if North Texas can pull the upset. This is not good for a team that has won about 75% of their games since 1993.

KSU averages 32 points a game and gives up 27 points a game. More of a rushing team, they run the ball for 190 yards per contest and give up 222 yards to opponents. They pass for 181 yards a game and allow opponents to pass for 216 yards. Once inside the twenty they score 80% of the time while allowing opponents to score only 54% of the time.

The Wildcat running game is Daniel Thomas, a Doak Walker semifinalist. This season he averages 111 yards per game or 5.1 yard per carry. While the kicker is normally the leading scorer on a football team, Thomas holds that spot, responsible for 86 points this season.

Six Wildcat receivers average in double figure yardage per game, eight receivers have played in all games this season and eleven receivers have touched the ball in a game this season.

In the kick return department, KSU is paced by William Powell, from Duncanville, Texas who brings the ball back 34.6 yards per catch and has already ran one back 100 yards. He is up for the first year award called the Burlsworth Trophy which is to honor the best walk-on player in the nation.

The Wildcats have a quarterback controversy. They use a two quarterbacks, Carson Coffman and Collin Klein. When Coffman is in the game, KSU passes. When Klein comes in, KSU runs the option and he is second on the team in rushing yards. However, he also leads the team in passing yards. Klein was under center in the KSU win over Texas.

Defense has hurt KSU all season long especially stopping the run. If North Texas is to win, they are going to have to saddle up Lance Dunbar and Brandin Byrd and run to a win.

Newspaper writers in Manhattan are already chalking this game up as a win for KSU, basically stating North Texas is 3-8 and fired their coach a month ago.
