North Texas Plays Tough but Falls to ULM
North Texas (3-8, 3-5) made the trip to
Monroe to take on Sun Belt Conference member University of
Louisiana-Monroe (5-6, 4-3). With a North Texas win, they would have
ended the conference schedule at 4-4 a great improvement over the
last several years.

North Texas was expecting to see a passing game from the Warhawks. Interim North Texas Head Football Coach Mike Canales stated “they pass the ball about 80% of the time.” So it came as a surprise to Defensive Coordinator Gary DeLoaches unit when ULM used the running game to pound his unit. The result was ULM used the long ball to get into the endzone.
North Texas controlled the game for much of the first and second quarter by running the ball. In the first quarter they moved the ball inside the ten yard line twice but had to settle for two Zach Olen field goals. In the end it was the difference in the game.
Conroy Hines' offensive unit was able to move the ball inside the three yard line but they were not able to get a touchdown and had to settle for a field goal. Linebacker Jeremy Phillips gave North Texas good field position on his interception of a Warhawk pass. North Texas moved to the six yard line where the drive stalled and had to settle for another field goal for a 6-0 lead.
ULM took a 7-6 lead on a 48 yard touchdown pass at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was more of a track meet for both teams as they almost scored at will. After the ULM touchdown, North Texas took over at the 17 yard line. Running Back Lance Dunbar, after being injured and leaving the game, came back in for the next series. He took the hand off from Dodge and with Victor Gill and Coleman Feeley clearing the way, Dunbar ran directly at the Green Brigade for an 83 yard score. After the Olen extra point North Texas was up 13-7. It was the longest run of his career and the longest run of the season for North Texas. It was also the sixth longest run in North Texas history and the longest run in the last 15 years.
ULM took the kickoff to the 40 yard line and from there were able to drive down the field to take a 14-13 lead. Then after stopping North Texas they scored again to take a 21-13 lead.
North Texas history was broken on the kick-off as Brelan Chancellor fielded the ball at the ten yard line and went the distance for a 90 yard kick-off return. The last time North Texas returned a kick-off was way back on 11-14-99 when Broderick McGrew took one back 100 yards against Utah State. After the Olen extra point, North Texas was behind 20-21.
Just before half, North Texas was able to stop ULM forcing them to punt. With 2:29 left in the half North Texas took over the ball and moved it down the field. A Dodge to Jamaal Jackson pitch and catch resulted in a touchdown with 20 seconds left in the half. After Olen's extra point was good North Texas had a 27-21 halftime lead.
ULM took the kick-off and with the aid of two successful fourth down conversion attempts scored to take a 28-27 lead. Neither team was able to get any points in the remainder of the third quarter but just before time expired Dunbar fumbled the ball which was recovered by ULM.
The fourth quarter opened with ULM moving the ball down the field for a touchdown and a 35-27 lead. North Texas responded by moving the ball down the field behind the running of Brandin Byrd. ULM kept North Texas out of the endzone forcing them to settle for a Olen 45 yard field goal. With a little over 9 minutes left to play North Texas trailed 30-35.
On the next possession, ULM moved the ball down the field to score on a 53 yard passing play making it a 42-30 game.
North Texas, on the kick-off and with the aid of penalty, took the ball to the ULM 39 yard line. After a three yard loss by Dodge, a bubble screen pass to Darius Carey ended up a 41 yard touchdown play. With 7:08 left in the game North Texas was down by only five points at 37-42.
ULM took the ball down the field for the final score of the night and secures a 49-37 win.
North Texas travels back home to close out the season and close Fouts Field facing Big 12 opponent Kansas State (6-5, 3-4). The Wildcats will be coming into the game after losing to Colorado 36-44.
