North Texas Tries to Halt KU Home Winning Streak

North Texas (2-0) will be facing another Big 12 opponent when they travel to face Kansas (2-0) tonight, 7PM. North Texas will be trying to break the 61 game home winning streak of the Jayhawks. KU is trying to tie a 62 home winning streak set by the 1994-98 Jayhawk team.

Kansas is ranked #6 in the ESPN/USAToday poll and #7 in the AP Poll and are expected win the KU Official SiteBig 12 Conference title.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams. Kansas is 17-3 against Sun Belt Conference members. The game will be on televised on ESPN Full Court.

Kansas is Coached by Bill Self who guided his team to a 33-3, 15-1 record last season. He has been at the helm for seven seasons carrying a 202-43 record for a .824 winning percentage. He has won one national championship, six regular-season titles and four league tournament titles. He sports an overall coaching record of 409-148 (.734 percent) record in 17 seasons.

Kansas is in a 'rebuilding year' after losing three of their players to the NBA which accounted for 50% of their point production Losing the leadership and experience from last year's team Self has stated about this years' team “I don’t know if we’ll have one (leader). I don’t know if that’s bad, either. I think we’ll do it by committee.”

Juniors Marcus Morris, F, 6-9, 235, Jr., and Tyshawn Taylor G, 6-3, 185, Jr., return and last year they accounted for 20 points per contest. Self has said of Morris “is the best all-around player I’ve coached since I’ve been here, maybe ever. Taking into consideration all the intangibles, I haven’t been around anybody who can do more things.” Morris is named to the 2010-11 Naismith Trophy preseason watch list.

Returning is Markieff Morris, 6-10, 245, C, Jr., twin brother of Marcus. He was the leader in shot blocking last year and does crash the board. Jeff Withey, 7-0, 235, C, RS So., a transfer from Arizona is also adept at shot blocking. He is coming back from foot surgery. Elijah Johnson, 6-4, 195, G, So., has missed the first two games of the season because of disciplinary reasons and is projected to play against North Texas. “I see him being our backup point guard,” Self has said about his return. A big part of the team is Tyreel Reed, 6-3,193, G, Sr., is a regular in the rotation. So far this season Kansas has been using nine men in their rotation.

They beat Nebraska 113-75 and Valparaiso 79-44.

North Texas has caught the attention of Kansas coaching and players after their overtime win over Texas Tech. Once the score was announced Self stated "I'm surprised. Not taking anything away from North Texas, but I know how good Texas Tech is going to be this year. Tech returns five of its six top scorers.” He went on to add “they have our respect without question.”

The thing he noted was Josh White was fast in fact “the whole North Texas team is fast. Their perimeter can all score and their big guys are all quick and active.”

North Texas will be facing a team that leads the Big 12 in scoring offense with 96 points a game and a margin of victory of 36.5 points over competition. They lead the conference in field goal percentage hitting 58.3% of their shots, lead with 24 assists per game and blocked shots with 7.5 per game. The bench averages 33.5 points a game.

If North Texas is going to win this game they can not make any mistakes, shoot bad shots and keep turnovers to a minimum. The bench is going to be the key. Kansas has a strong bench, some tall players coming in the game and they can score. The North Texas bench is going to have to play at peak performance.
