JayHawks Rain Threes on North Texas for Win
Head Football Coach Johnny Jones called on Alonzo Edwards, his first start of the season, Josh White, George Odufuwa, Shannon Shorter, Tristan Thompson as the starting five against #6 Kansas Jayhawks.
North Texas played KU extremely well during the first half but the second half KU opened the long ball and North Texas could not get one to go in. The result was the Jayhawks left the Eagles in the dusk, getting their 62nd straight home win tying their longest winning streak at home.
During the first half, North Texas was able to clog up the middle and forced KU into some offensive charges, turnovers and other errors. As a result, in the second half, KU Head Basketball Coach Bill Self started to go to the perimeter and shooting three-point shots. As a result, the Jayhawks broke the game open to cruise to an 88-60 win.
With North Texas not hitting a three point shot it broke North Texas' streak of getting at least one three point basket in a game since the 1987-88 season.
KU got the tip-off to take a 2-0 lead and never trailed although North Texas tied the game at 2-2 when Odufuwa hit two free throws. With KU up 8-2, Odufuwa got an offensive board and the put back to make it an 8-4 game. It was a tough first start for Edwards who acquired three fouls in the first three minutes of the game. KU hit a three to make it an 11-4 game. A timeout was called with 15:42 left in the first half and KU at the line
With both free throws going in KU was up 13-4. They were up 15-4 before Thompson rolled the ball in to make it a 15-6 game. Kedrick Hogans responded to a KU score to make it a 17-8 game. With 12:53 left in the first half and KU up 19-8 a timeout was called.
After KU hit one of two free throws they were up 20-8. After another foul, KU hit one of two free throws making it a 21-8 game. With 11:50 left in the game and North Texas with the ball, a timeout was called.
Odufuwa brought North Texas closer by hitting for two cutting the KU lead to 21-10. KU went up 24-10 before Hogans got a layup closing the gap to 24-12. Odufuwa's pass to Hogans and a slam made the score 24-14 and KU called a timeout with less than nine minutes left in the game.
KU added to their lead as a result of hitting two free throws. They were again fouled and were at the line with 7:37 left in the half before a timeout was called with KU up 26-14.
Coming out of the timeout, KU hit one of two free throws to make it 27-14 game. After trading missed baskets White on a pass from Odufuwa moved North Texas closer at 27-16. KU then added one point after hitting one of two free throws then added another two points on a basket. Thompson responded with a two making it a 30-18 game. He was then fouled on the next possession and hit one of two free throws to make it a 30-19 game. White added two more points for a 30-21 game. After a traveling call North Texas' Dominique Johnson hit for two and KU called a timeout with 4:11 left in the half and the score 30-23.
Another timeout was called at the 3:51 mark with the score 30-23 with KU at the line.
KU went up 35-23 before Thompson hit an 18 footer to make the score 35-25. KU was fouled and hit one of two free throws before Johnson hit for two with 2 seconds left for the halftime score of 36-27.
The second half started with North Texas on the attack but they could not score. KU went inside to get a slamdunk which brought the 16,300 fans into the game and KU had a 40-27 lead. Hogans quieted the crowd with a jam of his own making it a 40-29 game. KU added four points before Thompson hit a two and drew the foul but he missed the free throw so KU was up 44-31. KU added two more points at the foul line before White was fouled and with 15:55 left in the game a timeout was called with the score 48-31.
After the timeout White put both free throws in to make the score 48-33 game. KU responded by hitting two threes and Jones called a timeout with 14:44 left in the game and KU up 54-33.
KU added another three and a dunk before Thompson hit for two making it a 59-35 game. KU answered and hit for two threes. White hit for two, then Shorter went inside for two and was fouled. With Shorter at the line a timeout was called with 10:31 left in the game and the score 67-39.
Shorter missed the free throw but Odufuwa got the rebound and was fouled. He hit both free throws for a 67-41 game. KU extended their lead before White got a layup making the score 73-43. KU was fouled and hit both free throws before Edwards got an offensive rebound and a put back making the score 75-45 at the 7:26 timeout.
KU hit for three after the timeout and with the score 78-45 another timeout was called with 6:59 left in the game.
White was fouled after the timeout and he missed the first free throw but got the second to go in for a 78-46 game. KU hit another three and a two before Thompson put the ball in making it an 83-48 game. KU was fouled missed the first free throw but hit the second. Edwards was fouled and at the line missed the first but got the second to fall for a 84-49 game. A nice pass from White to Edwards ended up in the basket for a 84-51 game. KU added two more before Ben Knox added two for North Texas making it an 86-53 game. After KU hit another basket a timeout was called with 2:39 left in the game and KU up 88-53.
Johnson got two in the lane and drew the foul and after hitting the free throw KU was up 88-56. KU scored, then Johnson hit on a layup for 90-58 game. Johnson hit another two for the final score of the game and a 88-60 Jayhawk win.
