North Texas Runs over MTSU via Dunbar

North Texas (3-7, 3-4) traveled Middle Tennessee (3-5, 2-3) \to take on the Blue Raiders in Sun Belt Conference action. Under Interim Head Football Coach Mike Canales the team has moved from the passing spread offense to more of running spread offense in order to shake up a weak offense. Behind the running of Lance Dunbar, North Texas has been a more competitive team. Against MTSU, Canales used the big shoulders of Dunbar to get North Texas another win against last year's Sun Belt Conference Champion and New Orleans Bowl winner. The result of giving Dunbar the ball 36 times, North Texas took a 23-17 win in front of just over 14,000 fans.

North Texas jumped out early to take an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The first score was a result of Quarterback Riley Dodge hitting Wide Receiver Jamaal Jackson for a 30 yard pitch and catch for six points, the Zack Olen point after was good to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. North Texas went up 14-0 as a result of 3 yard run by Dunbar and the PAT by Olen.

In the second quarter, MTSU hit a field goal to make the score 14-3 then closed the gap to 14-10 on a 51 yard touchdown run with 1:49 left in the half.

After the kickoff, Dodge threw an interception with 23 seconds left allowing the Blue Raiders to return the ball to the north Texas 30 yard line. North Texas Defensive Back John Shorter returned the favor by intercepting the ball and returning it to the MTSU 42 yard line with ten seconds left. A pass to Wide Receiver Tyler Stradford moved the ball to the 37 yard line. Canales sent in Olen with about 4 seconds left in the half to try a 53 yard field attempt. In high school he managed to hit on 50+ yards so why not? If with the wind in his face the attempt was good to give North Texas 17-10 halftime lead.

North Texas took the kickoff to open the second half. They moved the ball using up nearly ten minutes on the clock before Olen hit another field goal to put North Texas out front 20-10. MTSU then responded and with the aid of a 15 yard personal foul penalty took the ball into the endzone to make it a 20-17 game.

The fourth quarter opened with North Texas in MTSU territory but they fumbled the ball into the endzone which was recovered by MTSU.

It went back and forth between the two teams before North Texas was able to move the ball to the MTSU 24 yard line as a result of Dodge scramble. Olen put the ball through the uprights to give North Texas a 23-17 lead with 1:10 seconds left.

MTSU looked like they were about to move the ball downfield to win the game but Shorter got his second interception of the game at the 39 yard line to snuff out any hopes of a MTSU win.

North Texas will now travel to the University of Louisiana-Monroe next Saturday.
