Basketball picking up

After the third or fourth football game of the season, fans in the stands started to talk about the upcoming basketball season. With basketball practice underway it was a good time to watch a practice or two to see how things are going.

Watched both the womens and mens practices. Can tell you this, if I was the track and field coach I would get over to The Super Pit to take a look at walkon guard 5'6” Sarah Workman. This girl blows by everyone during sprints. She was ending her sprints when every one else was just starting the final lap at the other end of the court.

The mens team was working out but they did not have the intensity one would think. However, when considering where they were in practice schedule it is not a big deal. Coach Johnnie Jones watched the warmups from about half-way the press boxes making a comment or two before moving down to the court..

Most of the time he coached the team with a firm and even voice. When down on the court he seemed to be explaining to some individual players why they were practicing the way, what he wanted and what the result would be. He talked to the team as a whole at times to explain what he wanted and why.

The team was broken into three teams black, white and yellow and they practiced against each other. When someone wasn't doing what he wanted he would talk to the player. While the warm-up drills were a little slow, the five on five was more uptempo.

There were several fast breaks after missed shots which were finished with a bucket. Passing was fairly crisp and shooting was not at season form. Again, nothing to worry about at this point in time. That will pick up this week.
