Offensive Line Helps Dunbar Run Over WKU 33-6

There were 15,373 Homecoming Fans at Western Kentucky who were ready to see their team do something they have not seen in a while; a two game winning streak. They were in for a treat as the two top running backs in the Sun Belt were going head-to-head to determine which one was the best. Would it be North Texas Running Back Lance or WKU's Bobby Rainey.

Not only was it a Homecoming game it was also a bowl game of sorts. The Bottom Ten Bowl if you will. Last week WKU was holding down the #2 slot, but got out with the convincing victory over University of Louisiana-Lafayette, and Canales' team was coming in at #10. He shBryant UNTouldn't feel that bad because another Texas team was on the list; at #5 were the Longhorns.

In the end it was Dunbar who proved that he was the best in the Sun Belt. He ran for 215 yards on 30 carries for a 7.3 average per carry and three touchdowns. Rainey, who was considered by many to be the best running back in the Sun Belt, totaled 100 yards on 23 carries for 2.3 yards a carry.

This is the second win of the season. All season long the offensive line seemed to be more effective when running the ball than when passing and Canales seemed to exploit the situation. In this game there were 41 running plays to 11 passing plays and a big time victory.

Offensive Line Coach Jeff Bryant (left) received one of the game balls because of the effort of his unit.

Dunbar summorized how well the offensive line did during the game by stating that when he carried the ball, the holes “were wide open.” As a result he was able to run “at full speed.” Even Brandin Byrd powered through those holes five times for 83 yards for a nice average of 16.6 yards per carry and a touchdown.

Even with the challenging couple of weeks behind the team, Dunbar said he worked hard along with the rest of the team. There was no quit in the team and they gave it all they had during practice and it came out during the game.

He liked the “up tempo” style of play and he felt that it was the difference in the way the offense played during the game.

North Texas had last week off and it helped him get healthier for the WKU game. They have been bugged by some injuries since the Clemson game.
