North Texas Now 4-0 Against Western Kentrucky
With Riley Dodge, caste and all, under center, North Texas traveled to take on Western Kentucky as their Homecoming opponent. It looked like it would be a game where WKU was on the rise while North Texas was declining.
Interim North Texas Head Football Coach Mike Canales put together a game plan that relied more on the run then the pass and as a result North Texas got their second win of the second.
Both teams played footsy with each for the first quarter and most of the second quarter before WKU entertained the home crowd with a field goal with 11 minutes left in the first half.
After the kick-off North Texas navigated the ball down the field to score a touchdown mainly on the running efforts of Lance Dunbar and Brandin Byrd. During the drive, Darius Carey was responsible for an outstanding catch to keep the drive alive. It was Dunbar who gave his team a 7-3, after a Zack Olen extra point, as a result of a seven yard touchdown run.
WKU worked themselves down the field and went for fourth and one with 2:07 left in the half. Defensive End K.C. Obi make a basketball leap in the air to knock the ball down to give North Texas another shot at a score before halftime.
Using the passing game North Texas struggled but moved the ball enough to give Zack Olen a 48 yard field goal attempt which was good near the right upright and North Texas held a 10-3 halftime lead.
Running out of the spread offense, North Texas struggled during the first half on first downs. They were put into a lot of third and long. The second half they went more to the running game.
Things started to fall apart for WKU in the second half. After the kick-off they went three and out. A short punt gave North Texas the ball near midfield. After throwing the ball three straight times, North texas was faced with a 4th and inches. Dunbar took the hand off and ran through the line to the three yard line. After a timeout because clock was almost out, Dunbar went up the middle for a TD. Olen missed the extra point giving North Texas a 16-3 lead.
The rest of the third and going into the fourth quarter, both teams exchanged a series of punts before WKU was able to work their way into field goal range. With over 13 minutes to play in the game they closed the gap to 16-6.
North Texas used a combination of both passing and running to get to the six yard line. WKU held forcing North Texas to settle for a field goal making the score 19-6.
WKU was driving late in the fourth quarter when Brandon Akpunku made a big stick to the WKU ball carrier to dislodge the football which was recovered by Zach Orr at the WKU 20 yard line. Dunbar did a lot of hard work during the next series of plays but it was Brandin Byrd going 53 yards for a touchdown to put North Texas up 26-6.
Olen kick a scrip kick which was recovered by Daniel Pryor. North Texas then started to run the clock out but Dunbar, with 48 seconds left, broke threw the line of scrimmage and walked in for the finale score of 33-6.
As a result, Canales is now 1-0 as a head coach and let it be known he would like the top spot on a permanent basis.
North Texas will now face conference leader Troy next week in one of the two remaining games left in Fouts Field. Troy will not be a happy camper as they dropped a conference game at the University of Louisiana-Monroe 14-28.
