Canales Takes Over

North Texas Rick Villarreal announced the promotion of Offensive Coordinator Mike Canales to Head Football Coach after the dismissal of Todd Dodge. The decision was made based upon the result of the total body of his work and not what was the result of the last few games,

Villarreal stated Dodge did a lot of good things for North Texas and mentioned things like the improvement in educational standards. Dodge was willing to do things for the university and willing to go anywhere to help the university.

It was a personal loss for Villarreal who said he had a lot of respect for Dodge.

The coaches were all informed about the decision and explained about why the decision was made. He was going to meet with the football team to explain to the situation.

Canales was put in as interim coach because at this point in time he was the best selection to lead the program forward. However, it does not mean he will be the next head coach. He will be part of the nationwide search for a replacement.

According to sources close to the program Villarreal has been hearing from coaches from all over the nation about the position even before it was open. So he is expecting some top quality coaches to be interviewed.
