North Texas Gets First Win Over FAU
North Texas continued to make those little mistakes which losses football games but against Florida Atlantic they were able to overcome most of those mistakes to take their first game of the season beating Florida Atlantic 21-17. It was the first win ever for North Texas over FAU.
FAU took the opening kick-off down the field for a 7-0 lead. North Texas came back to tie the game 7-7 with a nine play, eighty yard drive which concluded with a 23 yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Riley Dodge to Wide Receiver Darius Carey with 3:49 left in the first quarter.
The North Texas defense bowed up on the FAU offense forcing them to settle for a 30 yard field goal and a 10-7 lead with 12:17 left in the second quarter. North Texas then took their first lead of the game with 46 seconds left in the half when Dodge once again hooked up on a 46 yard touchdown pass to Carey to put North Texas up 14-10 at the half.
North Texas continued to hold the 14-10 lead through the third quarter and they extended the lead to 21-10 in the fourth quarter when Running Back James Hamilton blew by defenders for a 32 yard touchdown run with 7:45 left in the game.
About a minute later, FAU scored on three long passing plays making the score 21-17 with 6:52 left in the game.
With 2:24 left in the game, it appeared FAU was going to march down the field to take the lead. It appeared at one point they had the ball inside the North Texas five yard line when a 1st and ten catch was ruled incomplete.
At this point the North Texas defense turned up the heat. With the ball on the North Texas 28 yard line on a 2nd and ten play, Brandon McCoy sacked the FAU quarterback for an eight yard loss. With 3rd and 18, Kelvin Jackson and Frank Gaines stopped the receiver for a two yard gain to bring up 4th and 16. A dropped pass turned the ball over to North Texas with 59 seconds left.
Two North Texas victory formations gave them their first ever win over FAU, their first win of the season and their first Sun Belt Conference win of the year.
