Andrew Smith Memorial Game, May 15th

For every university there is a group of fans that want to help their school and the athletic department. It’s no different with the University of North Texas. These dedicated fans want to help their school become more competitive at the high levels of NCAA competition. They know the odds are against them but they do not care, they are willing to go the extra mile to support North Texas Athletics. This is what can be said about the fans that post on the GoMeanGreen.com site.

They are going the extra mile, or maybe the length of a football field and tons of Ben Gay, or Sports Crème or whatever to help the North Texas Program raise revenues for the athletic program.

Coming up on May 15th will be the seventh annual Andrew Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund Football Game. Kick off will be at 3 P.M. at the soccer field off Bonnie Brae.

The event was founded in honor of former North Texas QB Andrew Smith who was killed in an auto-accident in 2004. As the starting quarterback, Smith led North Texas to an 8-4 record and a 24-19 win over Cincinnati in the New Orleans Bowl. It was the first bowl win for North Texas since 1946.

This is a perfect event to pass away a great afternoon visiting with North Texas Football Fans, visit friends and get to see some past ‘old time football players’ once again in action. Former QB Scott Hall who battled nip and tuck with Smith for the starting position will be on the field again along with his former team mate Tight End Andy Blount.

This may not be the New Orleans Bowl teams of the past but no one can beat the price of admission, it’s free and everyone is invited. What a deal for family entertainment on a Saturday afternoon. Donations will be accepted with all donations going the scholarship fund.

There will be tailgating at the soccer complex and like all tailgating look for the football ritual of sharing the food and drink.

It can not be verified but rumor has it some of the present football players will be in the stands to “encourage” the “players” on to victory.
