Softball knocks off #15 Texas

OK so we missed it and so did a lot of other North Texas Eagle fans. While everyone was focusing in on the Men's Basketball team and the NCAA Tournament, the Lady Eagle Softball team were awaiting #15 Texas at Lovelace Stadium.

Hey folks, it doesn’t get much better than the Longhorns in town. They brought in a 20-3 record and figured they would hang another win in the total column. Afterall, they were facing a 9-9 team from the lowly Sun Belt Conference. In seven meetings before, it was an automatic win for them. So, same book different chapter as far as they were concerned.

The record crowd watched the combination of Jennifer Smith and Ashley Lail give up four hits each but they did not allow a run to cross the plate for Texas.  Smith started in the circle going four innings with Lail closing the game out and getting the win.

Texas recorded a no-hitter against North Texas and struck out ten North Texas batters. The only score of the game was the result of two walks and two wild pitches by the Longhorn starter in the fourth inning. The result was a 1-0 win for North Texas pushing their record to 10-9 and dropping Texas to 20-5.

The bottom of the fourth inning started with Mallory Cantler at the plate for North Texas and she drew the walk. She replaced by Ana Barren as pinch runner because of her speed. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mariza Martinez sacrifice fly to right field moved Barren to third. She scored from there on another wild pitch.

Martinez also played a pivotal role in the game during the first inning when she reached over the outfield fence to steal a home run from Texas.

Sun Belt Conference opponent South Alabama will be at Lovelace Field Saturday with first pitchexpected to be thrown at 2 P.M.
