It’s Oklahoma City for North Texas who will be seeded #15 and will take on the #2 seed KansasState(24-6). KSU ended the regular season ranked the #6 team in the nation.
The seeding and playing in the Oklahoma City bracket will be#1 Syracuse, #2 KSU, #3 Pittsburg, #4 Vanderbilt, #5 Butler, #6 Xavier, #7 BYU,#8 Gonzaga, #9 Florida State, #10 Florida, #11 Minnesota, #12 UTEP, #13 MurrayState, #14 Oakland, #15 North Texas and #16 Vermont.
North Texas will get extra exposure during the tournament because CBS-C sports will be following KSU throughout the tournament. The reason is Big 12 Coach of the Year, KSU Frank Martin and his star guard Denis “Macho” Clemente. Martin recently signed a new contract and said he still had “a lot of work left” coaching the Wildcats and although the contract renewal was nice he did not “chase the money.” He was loyal to KSU.
CBS-C did a feature on Martin and his signing of Clemente after the pairing were announced. Clemente originally played two years for the University of Miami, Florida. He was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and is the second cousin of Baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.
He was a preseason pick for several awards including being the picked the 10th shooter in the nation by Athons and Lindy’s chose him 16th among point guards.
Some basketball fans may remember his antics against Kansas last year when he pushed a player in the throat and then slapped another player in the side of the head. During the game, Clemente was tearing up Kansas with his play, so the Jayhawks started to put a lot of bodies on him. The pressure started to lead to his frustration and then he exploded. Martin suspended him for one game for slapping the player. After the game he became known as a thug. There are clips of the incident on the internet.
Before signing with KSU, he played at the University of Miami. He was suspended from the Hurricane program which was believed to be in part to poor grades.
On going to KSU, Art Alvarez, Director of Basketball Operations for the Miami Tropics AAU program stated. "He's not atroublemaker or anything like that. He's a great kid. Trust me."
Clemente has blazing speed and once was timed to go from baseline to baseline in 3.3 seconds while he was dribbling the ball.
