EAGLETALK.NET: North Texas headed to the NCAA Big Dance
North Texas headed to the NCAA Big Dance
The Sunbelt Conference Championship Game was the way it was drawn up on paper, #1 Troy versus #2 North Texas. It was the seniors of Troy going against the younger Mean Green team. It was the team guaranteed of post season play in the NIT or NCAA in Troy, versus the team that had to win to have any chance of any post season play in North Texas. It was the team who wanted revenge for a regular season loss on a missed three point play on the final shot of the game in Troy and the team which won the game and wanted to prove the win was for real. This game lived up to the hype and for the fans that missed the game you missed something that will be part of North Texas history for years.
The scoring between UNT and Troy opened with Tristian Thompson hitting two free throws to give UNT a 2-0 lead and put his career total at 1,000 points. UNT continued to build on their lead but could not pull away from Troy. The Trojans kept chipping away at the Mean Green and eventually took the lead. As a result, it looked like the Trojans would go on a run. However, North Texas stopped the momentum of Troy and the two teams played even ball. It was a fast pace game during the first half and it looked like the final would be in the eighties. At halftime Troy was up 40-38.
In the second half the action started to slow down as Troy started to clog up the middle forcing North Texas to shoot long distance. Helping the slowdown was the result of Head Coach Johnny Jones electing to keep his front line players in for most of the second half. Josh White played the entire second half and toward the end of the game it started to show as he started to make mistakes. However, White and the rest of the team fought through being tired because they could see the Championship Title and the trip to the Big Dance within reach. You could feel their will to win was beginning to take over the game.
With 2:31 left, the game was tied at 61-61. At this point Troy started to put on the full court press and UNT started to make mistakes. White was double teamed and tied up by two Troy defenders at the 1:17 mark. Normally, he would be able to get out of the situation. As a result, the ball went to Troy on the possession arrow.
The Trojans missed their shot and George Odufuwa got the rebound but was fouled. North Texas got the ball out of bounds. The Mean Green got the inbound pass to Eric Tramiel who was affected by the full court press and turned the ballover. With lay-up for Troy was but Tramiel was called for a foul on the play. With 53.4 seconds left, Troy hit the free throw to tie the game.
White then drove down the lane but instead of driving to the basket pulled up to hit a two point jumper with 22 seconds left to take a two point lead.Troy came down the court but their shot was block by Odufuwa off a Troy player with seven seconds left.
Troy made it tough for an in bounds pass and after a timeout, a baseball type pass caught by White over the timeline enabled North Texas to get the ball inbounds. White dribbled the ball around and was fouled with 2.9 seconds left sending him to the foul line for a one on one.
He gave the Mean Green crowd a heart attack as his first ball bounced all over the iron before falling through giving North Texas a three point lead at 66-63. He missed the second shot which was rebounded by Troy. They tried a desperation shot from beyond the timeline to tie the game and send it into overtime. The shot went over the back board securing a 66-63 win for North Texas making them the Sun Belt Tournament Champions and the trip to the NCAA Tournament.
