North Texas stymies Denver advance to Championship Game

It looked like it might be a repeat of the University of Louisiana-Monroe game as North Texas came out of the gate stumbling against Denver allowing the Pioneers to jump out to an early lead.

North Texas
came roaring back to blow by the Pioneers and it almost looked like it was going to be a
laugher. However, Denver stayed within striking distance for the remainder of the first half and continued to hang around into the second half. The Mean Green just could not drive the dagger into Denver.

Denver seemed to keep within eight points during the second half. They started to make their move with just under ten minutes left in the game. They took control, chipped away at North Texas's lead and with eight minutes left, they trailed by two 45-43.

A few seconds later, Denver went to tie the game but George Odufuwa started to swing the momentum back into the Mean Green's favor with a big time block of a layup.

Denver was able to cut the lead to 46-45. It then became Josh White time as he took control of the game by getting an inside lay-up in traffic. After stopping Denver on their next trip down the court, he followed up with a three pointer. It pushed the Mean Green lead to 51-45 at final media time out mark at 3:59.

Tristian Thompson got an inside layup and a foul extending North Texas’ lead to 53-46. With 1:26 left, White was fouled and after hitting both free throws, the Mean Green was up 55-46. Collen Magrum was fouled and after hitting both free throws pushed North Texas' lead to 57-46.

Denver fought back by hitting a three point shot to make it 57-49 at the one minute mark.White was fouled, hit both free throws to push North Texas up by ten, 59-49 with 30 seconds left. Denver was fouled and hit two free throws to close within eight. However, the game was put out of reach as Thompson and Shannon Shorter hit free throws making the final score 63-56.
