North Texas comes back for an impressive 69-66 win
The West Division Champions and #2 seeded North Texas could notfind the basket for most of their quarterfinal game against #12 seeded University of Louisiana-Monroe in the Sunbelt Tournament in Little Rock, Arkansas. The men of North Texas trailed the Warhawks all game and it looked to the Mean Green fans they would be coming home Denton early.
Even with ULM in foul trouble, with three starters on the bench for a big
part of the first half, the Mean Green was not able to make up ground. What kept ULM in the game was their bench. In the first half the Warhawk reserves poured in 17 points while the North Texas bench played anemic ball by only scoring 3three points.
What kept North Texas in the game during half was the play of senior forward Eric Tramiel who carried the team on his back. The Mean Green was down at one time by 14 points when Tramiel stepped up his play to help North Texas to chip away at the ULM lead. As a result of his eleven first half points and rebound efforts, North Texas was able to crawl itself closer but still trailed 33-27 at halftime.
The second half was almost a copy of the first half.North Texas could not seem to get things going until about midway through the second half when Josh White and Tristan Thompson started to connect on three pointers. Their sharp shooting started to change the momentum from ULM’s side of the ball to North Texas.
No matter what North Texas was able to do ULM came back to answer. As a result, the Warhawks kept their lead around seven points. With less then four minutes in the game, North Texas was down 53-60 and it looked like they were going to upset the Mean Green. It was then White and Thompson helped North Texas go on a 16-6 run.
With 1:46 minutes left, North Texas took its first lead of the game, 63-61 on a White three point shot. ULM retook the lead on at three point shot but Tramiel’s two point layup gave North Texas a 65-64 lead with 54 seconds left. North Texas was able to hold off ULM to take a 69-66 win and now face #6 seed Denver (19-12) tonight at8 P.M.
